Joy Garnett is an artist and writer whose multidisciplinary work explores the archive in its various forms. She served as Arts Editor for the Duke journal Cultural Politics from 2005 until 2016. Her project The Bee Kingdom includes a family memoir (in progress) and visual works that draw on research around her late grandfather, the Egyptian Modernist poet Ahmed Zaky Abushady (1892-1955). Her chapter, “The Lost Narratives of A.Z. Abushâdy, Poet and Bee Master,” appears in Cultural Entanglement in the Pre-Independence Arab World: Arts, Thought, and Literature (I.B. Tauris/Bloomsbury, 2019) and draws on conference proceedings from the Centre for Advanced Study of the Arab World, University of Edinburgh. Her artworks and writings have appeared in an eclectic array of publications, sometimes side-by-side, including Full Blede, Ibraaz, Rusted Radishes, Art21 Magazine, Virilio and Visual Culture (Edinburgh University Press, 2013), and The Artists’ and Writers’ Cookbook (powerHouse Books 2016). Garnett’s work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum, MoMA–PS1, FLAG Art Foundation, Artists Space, Smack Mellon, White Columns (all in NY); the Milwaukee Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Craft Portland (OR), Boston University Art Gallery, National Academy of Sciences (Washington, DC), and the Witte Zaal (Ghent, Belgium). She has been awarded grants from Anonymous Was a Woman, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Wellcome Trust, and the Chipstone Foundation. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the National Academy of Sciences (Washington, DC), Altria, and The West Collection (Oaks, PA). She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, the artist Bill Jones.
